Elements and modes

Fire, earth, air and water describe temperament; cardinal, fixed and mutable describe how a sign moves. Together they give each sign its address.

Two simple grids

Every sign carries one element and one mode. Four elements times three modes gives twelve unique combinations, which is exactly the twelve signs. That neat structure is a large part of why the system has lasted: it is easy to hold in your head.

The four elements

Elements describe a general temperament.

  • Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): enthusiasm, initiative, heat
  • Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practicality, patience, the tangible
  • Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): ideas, conversation, perspective
  • Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): feeling, memory, intuition

The three modes

Modes, sometimes called qualities, describe where in a season a sign falls and how it tends to act. Cardinal signs begin a season and tend to initiate. Fixed signs sit in the middle and tend to sustain. Mutable signs close a season and tend to adapt. Aries is cardinal fire: a spark that starts things. Leo is fixed fire: a hearth that keeps burning. Sagittarius is mutable fire: a flame that moves to new fuel.

A note on Ba Zi elements

Chinese Ba Zi uses a different set of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Mystica shows a Ba Zi element from your birth year only. That is a single layer of a much larger system and is not a full Ba Zi chart. Do not blend the two element systems; they are separate traditions with separate logic.

Try this

Name your sign’s element and mode, then describe a recent situation in those terms. Did you initiate, sustain or adapt? The vocabulary is most useful as a way to describe what you already did.
