The twelve signs
A first vocabulary for the zodiac: what a sign is, how the year divides, and how to hold each description lightly.

What a sign actually is
In Western astrology the zodiac is a belt of sky divided into twelve equal 30-degree sections. Your Sun sign is the section the Sun occupied, from Earth’s point of view, on the day you were born. It is a calendar coordinate first and a personality story second. The story is symbolic tradition, not measurement.
The twelve, in order
The year begins at the March equinox with Aries and moves around the wheel, each sign lasting roughly a month.
- Aries, Taurus, Gemini: spring into early summer
- Cancer, Leo, Virgo: summer into the first days of autumn
- Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius: autumn toward the winter solstice
- Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces: winter into the next spring
Why the dates are approximate
The Sun changes sign at a precise moment that shifts by hours from year to year, and by time zone. Mystica uses fixed calendar boundaries such as Aries from March 21, which is right for most birthdays and can be a day off for people born near a boundary. If your birthday sits on an edge, an ephemeris for your birth year and place will settle it.
How to read a sign description
Treat each description as a set of questions rather than facts about you. If Taurus is described as steady, ask where steadiness helps you and where it becomes stubbornness. Every sign comes with a gift and a shadow, and the useful work is noticing which one is showing up today.
Try this
Read your own sign’s guide, then read the sign opposite yours on the wheel. Write down one line from each that surprised you. The contrast usually teaches more than the match.
