Chart basics

What a natal chart contains, why birth time and place matter, and what a Sun sign alone leaves out.

The sun is the opening sentence

A natal chart is a map of the sky at the moment and place of your birth. It plots the Sun, Moon and planets against the zodiac signs and against twelve houses. Your Sun sign is one point on that map, which is why chart readers often call it the opening sentence rather than the whole story.

The main pieces

A beginner chart has a few core components.

  • Planets and luminaries: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the outer planets, each placed in a sign
  • Houses: twelve areas of life, calculated from the birth time and place
  • Ascendant, or rising sign: the sign on the eastern horizon at birth
  • Aspects: angles between planets, such as conjunction or opposition

Why time and place matter

The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days, and the Ascendant changes about every two hours. Without a birth time, the Ascendant and houses cannot be calculated. Without a place, the same moment gives a different horizon. My Mystica calculates a classical seven-body natal chart locally from a timed birth profile with coordinates and a timezone. Unknown-time profiles show only signs stable throughout the local birth date. The daily symbolic reading remains a separate system.

Reading a chart without overreading it

Start with three questions: where is the Sun, where is the Moon, and what sign is rising? Treat each as a theme to explore, not a verdict. Charts contain contradictions on purpose, and the interesting part is how you hold them together.

Try this

If you know your birth time, open Your chart in My Mystica and compare the calculated Sun, Moon and Ascendant. Write one sentence on the themes you notice. The natal panel uses tropical placements and whole-sign houses; another tool using a different house system may show different house placements.
